Recently we celebrated woman’s day. Everyone ( including the HR) were greeting the women in their lives. Brands too utilized this opportunity to the full extent.Women all over were treated like supernatural beings carrying the world on their shoulders. Chocolates and bouquets were raining everywhere “Yes,we are special”,we exclaimed.
Post one day after the celebration everything is the same as before no flowers,no greetings nothing. No one bothers to notice me anymore …I feel like the donkey on which Jesus rode on Palm Sunday, the crowd laid down Palm leaves, shouted praises, spread their clothes for it to walk on but the very next day the same hardwork and painful humiliation, he became invisible. No one made way for him or waved at him. He would have felt so depressed but we know that it was Jesus because of whom he received the appreciation that thought he had earned.
Many a times we too forget that ‘my achievements’, my ‘success’ and my ‘intelligence’ is nothing if it was not because of His great mercy. We forget that we deserve nothing but death for our ungratefulness and disobedience. If it was not for the infinite forgiveness of our Lord, we would have returned to rubble long before.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Ash Monday marks the onset of Lent in the Syro Malabar churches . The significance of Ash Monday (or Ash Wednesday as in Latin Churches) is to remind us that from dust we were created and there we shall return ( Ecclesiastes 3:20 ). All the material things that we hoard, the fight for fame , trampling the weaker ones in the rat race of today will one day leave us .Yes, they leave us and its not the other way round because we continue to live on for eternity.Nothing and no one can accompany us there except our own soul of which we think so little.
We are so busy with the perishables, the opinion of others, the ‘now’ that we don’t bother to even care about the eternal wasting of our soul .All our hard earned money, popularity and branded stuffs will leave us waving a goodbye and our only sojourner will be our soul, unhealthy and in tatters.
Let this Lent be our wake-up call to start an investment for our next life.
Point to ponder
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?(Matthew 16:26,27)
